This little stretch is almost always holding a couple Hybrids, a Drum or two and sometimes you might find catfish. Thanks to the pumps that come on every 10-15 minutes and discharge into the creek, this spot is usually hot…sometime more than others. You might have heard me lamenting a big fish i hooked in the discharge a week or two ago…it was a super powerful fish that struck a big hammerhead sculpin right in the discharge as it erupted about 6ft off the bank. I went back today as i often do… I started out with the same fly…I started by dappling the outer edges of the rocks right around some submerged vegetation and wouldn’t you know it, before my very eyes a big hybrid comes up and gulps the fly! it was a really nice fish like some of the others I’ve been catching lately..
That was enough to keep me casting for another hour or so, the fish usually hit real quick when they are present so any lul indicates the fishing is probably done, but I don’t quit easy. When the pumps went off I knew it was time to throw right up in the discharge…a tap on the line and bingo! Big fish on. Forgive my self photography
This bad boy ran me up the creek then came back down…and ran me a couple more times… i had to crank down the drag danger tight just to make sure he didn’t get me in the snags. what a fish! I never checked for broken stripes, but the fish did seem flatish and broad so im going to say Hybrid striped bass, cuz I’ve never seen a stripper, but on second inspection of all the photos I don’t see any broken stripes..?. This fish was a good 5 inches bigger than any of my previous catches and did about 2-3x the running. All time best or damn close.
After that I got a drum on the same fly. summing it up….
